International Education’s Dirty Little Secret

It’s an open secret

Many, if not most, international students that come to the United States ultimately want to move on to a work visa, and eventually to green card status.

Shocking, right?

No, you’re not shocked at all, because this is an open secret in the field of education.

But we’re not supposed to talk about it.

We’re not supposed to think about it.

We’re not supposed to think about talking about the thought of it.

Why?

Because of this thing called ‘willful misrepresentation.’ Willful misrepresentation means that an international student was purposely misleading about their intentions when they entered the U.S.

Basically, the idea is that the U.S. government wants people to be honest about their intentions when leaving the country. It’s a noble goal.

But here’s the thing:

Nobody goes to college to get a degree.

They go to chase their dream.

It’s not about an MFA, it’s about creating amazing art.

It’s not about getting an MBA, it’s about making it to the C-suite.

It’s not about studying in the U.S. for x years and then going home, it’s about chasing the American Dream.

Yes, some will pursue those dreams in their home country. Some will want to pursue those dreams here.

Now, the best way to keep those green card dreams alive is to follow the international students regulations. In other words, while you are an F-1 students, you should conduct yourself as an F-1 student.
